Tonkatsu  / Chicken katsu. This is my family recipe for Chicken Katsu - Japanese style fried chicken. Can also be used to make Tonkatsu, just use pork cutlets instead of chicken. Serve with white rice and tonkatsu sauce.

Ingredients of Tonkatsu  / Chicken katsu

  1. You need of Chicken breast 500g (it can be other meat too).
  2. Prepare 100 g of flour.
  3. It's 2-3 of eggs.
  4. It's 1 cup of bread crumbs.
  5. Prepare of salt and pepper.
  6. Prepare of oil for deep frying.

The most popular katsu is tonkatsu, or Japanese fried pork cutlet. For people who prefer chicken, there is chicken katsu or Japanese fried chicken cutlet. Katsu is served with Tonkatsu sauce or katsu sauce, which pairs perfectly well with the fried meat. Chicken Katsu is chicken fillet breaded with flour, egg, and Panko (bread crumbs), then deep fried, just like Tonkatsu.

Tonkatsu  / Chicken katsu instructions

  1. Cut chicken into slices. Thicker or thinner, completely to your taste! But no more than 1/2 inch thick..
  2. Salt and pepper chicken and let it rest for 10 mins.
  3. Coat chicken with wheat flour, then egg, then bread crumbs.
  4. Deep fry for 2-3 min, if thin. 4-5 minutes if thick..

It is a comfort food rather than a healthy Japanese food, but if you use cuts like chicken breasts or tenders instead of thighs, it can become a little lighter fare. Chicken katsu (Japanese chicken schnitzel or chicken cutlet) is usually served with the sweet and savory tonkatsu sauce, finely shredded cabbage and cucumbers.
